The US national debt has exceeded $40 trillion for the first time in history, according to a US Treasury Department document. According to the data, the total US national debt stood at $40.047 trillion as of Tuesday, August 18. The amount of debt held by the public amounted to more than $32.265 trillion, while intragovernmental debt exceeded $7.781 trillion. The statutory debt limit for the US national debt is set at $41.103 trillion, according to Treasury Department data.
