Proposals by US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to further reduce America’s military footprint in Europe were quashed by the Trump administration, according to US media citing anonymous sources.Hegseth had sought to unveil the wider cuts at a June meeting with NATO’s top military brass in Brussels — a move that would have deepened the drawdowns beyond the already-scrapped armored brigade deployment to Poland and the earlier withdrawal of an infantry brigade from Romania, the report said. The Pentagon chief is aggressively pushing for deeper troop cuts in Europe in order to free up military assets for the growing focus to counter China, it added.The debate over US troop numbers in Europe and allied defense contributions is likely to take center stage when Trump sits down with NATO leaders in Ankara next week.
